Sorry about not having any links. So far, the community is invite only. I’ll definitely check out local motors. I still think it’s surprising that mostly European car makers are the ones embracing social media thus far. We’ll see where it goes from here.

Yes I think it makes perfect sense. In fact a lot of car manufacturers already have done things with communities. (Fiat, BMW, Mini and more). Another related community is the recently started “local motors” where communities produce their own cars: very cool and surprisingly real.
